Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory

Herschel Girls' Preparatory is proud to fly the Eco-Schools Green Flag. In 2007 it was one of just two schools in the Cape Town region awarded the flag for the third successive year.

The Eco-Schools Programme is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which accredits schools that make a commitment to continuously improve their school's environmental performance with Green Flags and Eco-School status. Schools registering for the Eco-Schools programme have to present an annual portfolio for assessment, illustrating what they have done to improve in a sustainable way the environmental learning at the school during the year.

At Herschel Preparatory School the Eco-Schools Programme is a whole school programme with the involvement of staff, pupils and the parent community. Many of the lessons taught both in and out of the classroom have an environmental focus; they have embarked on projects to reduce the use of resources such as paper, water, electricity, and they run a community recycling programme (linked with the Oasis Association).

The Preparatory School has established a close relationship with the Friends of the Arderne Gardens (FOTAG) and pupils are involved in some conservation programmes with FOTAG.

Minimising the use of paper and encouraging recycling are promoted at Herschel, which makes use of the Oasis Recycling Project. Oasis provides employment for men and women with intellectual disability. Recycle bins are placed throughout the school and are emptied weekly. Inter-grade competition is encouraged to promote the idea of saving paper and recycling waste. Parents are also encouraged to recycle, and many drop off recycling on a regular basis.

eWaste

"Footprints would like to thank Herschel for taking responsibility for the safe disposal of their ewaste and at the same time assisting with the creation of jobs and the reduction of harmful toxins going into our landfills and environment."

The volumes of obsolete and broken ewaste by companies are an unforeseen and unplanned for concern, and many people do not know the hazards associated with irresponsible disposal. The ICT Department at Herschel believes in disposing of obsolete and broken technological equipment in a manner that is safe for the environment by using the services of the Footprints Environmental Centre, eWaste, to safely dispose of waste. Footprints is a registered non-profit organization focusing on the conservation and wise use of resources, as well as the prevention of pollution from these resources.
