What fun Herschel girls have had with Readathon 2011! Each day has been filled with reading and writing and decorating and creating and visiting the transformed library. We hope you have taken time to visit the library with your daughter and that you were able to appreciate the detail and care with which the team of mothers and librarians decorated it. Have you seen poor Horton sitting with snow on his head, waiting for the mommy-bird who is lazing in the sun? Did you notice the Wacky Wednesday Corner where the computer mouse has a tail?
The girls have been watching Dr Seuss DVDs, reading their own books and also to the little ones. Teachers have gone out of their way to incorporate the Dr Seuss theme in their lesson-planning and practical work.
Theodore Geisel (aka Dr Seuss or Theo Lesieg) would surely have been proud of the way the girls and teachers have participated and had fun! He said: "I like nonsense: it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities." The costumes on Dress-Up Day were fabulous! And as for Wacky Wednesday - it has been really WACKY!
Visiting authors included Lulu Fellowes and Heidi de Maine (Grade R - 3) and Ian Pugh (Grade 6 - 7) who all talked about their own books. Jenna Lowe in Grade 10 at the Senior School shared with the Grade 4s her experiences as a young author. The Grade 5s had great fun learning about magazine production with Deborah Herd. Thank you to Kathy and Carol from BookMark for their very informative talks on age-appropriate books brand-new on the market. They really do inspire our young readers! Readathon ends on Thursday 24 March.
