Last Saturday afternoon (28 May) a group of twenty children and about 12 parents and teachers visited the newly developed Green Point Park and Biodiversity Garden. We were guided around this magnificent site by Mr Stephen Grainger who was involved in the development of what was the old Green Point Common. He explained to us that when approval to build the stadium for the Soccer World Cup was given, it was on condition that the City of Cape Town established a park with free access to all the citizens of Cape Town. Although it is still a ‘work-in-progress', it is already a beautiful recreational area. The Biodiversity Garden is a fascinating educational site where we learnt a great deal about biodiversity and its importance, about early Cape inhabitants and about medicinal plants. We wandered around the garden reading the information plaques, looking at the plants and the many beaded and other models. The girls also enjoyed playing on the equipment in the exercise area - which gave them an opportunity to warm up as it was a very cold day. If you haven't visited this area, do go. Take a picnic basket and enjoy sitting on the lawn looking up at the graceful lines of the stadium, at Signal Hill and Table Mountain and at the Mouille Point Lighthouse.
