Sleeping bags for the homeless

The Indoor Sports Centre at Herschel Girls School was a hive of activity when the Grade 9 and 11 girls took up a challenge to make a hundred sleeping bags in an hour for the homeless in and around Rondebosch. Manufacturing the bags from newspaper and plastic, a project of Claremont Rotary, was launched in 2005 and is run by Ms Jo Maxwell who says that more than 20 000 bags have been made since 2005.  After an hour’s work the Herschel girls were ready with another 130 bags which will be distributed to the homeless by St Michael’s Catholic Church and St Paul’s Anglican Church in Rondebosch.
