Campus Leaders
The system of leadership at Herschel encourages and emphasises service. Leadership skills are developed from Grade 8, including the following:

  • Each class democratically elects a Forum Representative who leads the class for a six-month period and represents the class at Grade and School Forums;
  • Clubs are pupil-run and management training is provided for this purpose.

Every year a group of Prefects is elected from the Grade 11 group to serve for the ensuing twelve months (during their Grade 12 year). This group consists of an Executive Team of a Head Girl and two Deputy Heads, with 12 others, each of whom heads a specific portfolio:

  • Boarding
  • Culture and Societies
  • Grade Prefects (Grade 8 - 11)
  • School Management and Resources
  • Service and Spirituality
  • Spirit and House Leadership
  • Sport

Within each Portfolio are sub-categories, each of which offers further opportunities for leadership throughout the lower grades.

The process followed for the election includes nomination (with seconders), a manifesto of intention and school voting. From here a short list is compiled and interviews are conducted by senior staff, staff representatives and the outgoing Prefect body.

Girl Talk

Herschel Girls’ High School is a school that provides the perfect environment in which girls can discover the important lessons of life through academics, sport and culture. It is a place for girls from age 13 to 18 to learn, laugh and grow in a space that encourages individuals to be the best that they can be in all aspects of school life. Herschel is more than a school; it is a family – where smiles and laughter are shared and friendships are formed which are so strong that they will last a lifetime. Herschel will give you more than simply an education of algebra and verbs; it will prepare you for life as a capable and proud South African woman with the knowledge that there is no obstacle too big to be overcome and no hand too small that it cannot be held in yours.
