Welcome from the Head
Herschel, founded in 1922, is an independent Anglican School that provides an incomparable learning continuum for girls from Pre-Nursery to Grade 12 and celebrates the diversity of our students from varied cultural backgrounds. We work tirelessly to create an environment in which every girl has the opportunity to thrive and in which she is encouraged to cultivate a passion for life, to become engaged in the learning process and to develop to her full potential.

We focus on the spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being of the pupils in a positive vein and invite them to enjoy their education. There is a demonstrated commitment to beliefs and values education, and as such the girls are encouraged to develop ethical and moral values, self esteem, self-confidence and a sense of their own worth. In all their undertakings the girls are urged to take risks, to step into uncharted zones and to find the balance between their need for school support and their own ability to face challenges.

The girls are taught in an environment in which they develop a sense of social justice and compassion and become independent learners. We believe that girls need to develop maturity in interpersonal relationships and learn to deal with the elements of both success and failure.

Herschel offers a breadth of curriculum that is combined with excellent academic standards and a rich spread of extra-curricular activities, including culture, sports, clubs and societies. Our teachers combine traditional elements with innovation within the framework of the National Curriculum Statement of the Department of Education. We have been fortunate to be able to modernise and extend our facilities and yet retain the character of a long tradition of excellent schooling.

The school is well provided with specialist teaching areas and the latest resources, including computer laboratories, an extensive network carrying the latest software and access to the school Intranet and the Internet.

At Herschel we instil creativity and flair, enthusiasm and the capacity for independent and critical thinking. We aim to develop good communication skills, interpersonal relations, problem-solving skills and teamwork. The girls are encouraged to take the initiative through a dynamic programme of leadership and community service opportunities.

There is a dynamic and caring school community with a comprehensive pastoral programme established through the house system, tutor system, mentor and peer group systems. The school’s character is built by its people and there is a close-knit atmosphere with ongoing interaction between pupils, staff, parents, the local community and the alumni. For many, the association with the school is lifelong and we celebrate the tradition of third-generation Herschel students.

We work hard to make every girl feel that she is a happy, valued member and contributor and work relentlessly to always stay true to our school’s credo of "learning to make a difference".
