Orientation Program
It is important that new pupils settle down and feel relaxed and at home as soon as
possible. The staff and pupils provide them with maximum assistance and
reassurance as they start the process of integration.
Pre-Preparatory
Class teachers and the School Counsellor ensure that new pupils are warmly welcomed into their new environment and parents are kept informed about their daughters' progress.
Preparatory
In the Preparatory School a Grade 7 girl is assigned to each new girl to ensure that she feels welcome. The School Counsellor meets all the new girls regularly during the first few weeks and as required thereafter. All new girls are invited to a new tea with the Head and, after the first few weeks, the class teacher writes to the parents to inform them about their daughters' progress.
Senior
All new Grade 8 pupils are invited to an informal get-together at Herschel at the end of their Grade 7 year to meet each other and their mentors.
On the day prior to the start of the first term, all Grade 8s and other new girls and their parents are welcomed at a special Orientation Day. There are talks by the Head, the Deputy Head, the Guidance Counsellor, and the Grade Head. Activities include tours of the school, opportunities to meet with class and subject teachers, and the purchasing of second-hand books and clothing. Each new girl is assigned a mentor who cares for her over the course of the year.
