Grade 10 learner Ciara van Niekerk is making headlines in a slightly different sport: stock car and circuit racing! Ciara is a racing driver for the Western Province Motorclub at Killarney International Raceway. She started racing when she was 11 years old and has just completed her 3rd season of stock car racing, winning the 2017/2018 championship.
On the 9th August, Women’s Day, Ciara made her debut race on the Killarney main circuit, a phenomenal achievement as she was one of only two girls to race alongside the men! She raced in two heats but unfortunately due to technical issues with her car in the first heat, she couldn’t place. However, her lap times improved by 3 seconds from Race 1 to Race 2 and she broke the lap record for her division, resulting in her being awarded the Western Province Motor Club Driver of the Day Award out of a total of 150 competitors.
